The Mississippi State Board of Optometry was created by the legislature to meet the public’s need for protection from incompetent or negligent optometric practice. The Board protects the public through licensure and disciplinary procedures. The Mississippi State Board is charged with ensuring that the licensed Optometrists maintain high standards of professionalism and quality of care to safeguard public health.
Under new regulations, requiring standardization of licensure, all Optometrist must be certified to use diagnostic and therapeutic agents by December 31, 2006. Effective July 1, 2005, Mississippi Optometrists are authorized to prescribe oral medications for the treatment of ocular disease.

The Board conducts two (2) licensure examinations each year, on the second Saturday of January and July. Pursuant to §73-19-9. In its regulatory role, the Board receives, investigates, and responds to consumer’s complaints.
